Winner - Best Original Song Score & Best Original Musical, Academy Awards, 1985

The eternal Artist Formerly Known As Prince returns to the big screen in an explosion of lavender paisley and sensual charm with the 40th anniversary re-release of Purple Rain.

Winner of Grammy and Academy Awards for its pulsating score, Purple Rain marks the electrifying movie debut of Prince as the Kid, a Minneapolis club musician as alienated as he is talented. The Kid struggles with a tumultuous home life and his own smouldering anger while taking refuge in his music and his steamy love for sexy Apollonia Kotero.

While the content of the story and its gender politics may be dated by 2024 standards, there is no denying the lasting power of Prince's screen presence, especially in those moments when he is onstage in his element.

"Purple Rain became a generational manifesto, while providing the largest megaphone yet for one of the greatest geniuses in pop music.” - NPR

“Even those who aren't Prince fans are likely to be captivated by its energy, enamored with its simple, often poignant storyline.” - The Hollywood Reporter
